barack obama's going to rally his side, republicans will rally their side. look, the obama administration has said they might cut up to $400 billion out of medicare. i think this is going to get done, but i think they'll wait until the last minute to make sure each side looks tough. >> what's fascinating to me very quickly, when i hear both sides of the argument and the sticking appointments where they're digging in, there's logic on both sides, but who are the dealmakers who are really pulling this together? because sometimes when i listen to some of the political folks, i'm not so sure they are the ones that are sort of moving all the pieces. very quickly, jason, ron, who do you think it is? >> i think the players on tv, you know, obviously the president's going to be part of it, speaker boehner will be part of it, but eric cantor, vice president biden, there are a number of -- senator mitch mcconnell, the minority leader, harry reid. these are the big players but, you know, there are also ones too, like senator chuck schumer. there are a number of big players here that will be involved

that she would emphasize the points that the obama administration wanted emphasized. i walked out of the meeting with a profound sense of disappointment. martha: hmmm. melissa: those are pretty strong words from a senator who is known for not necessarily towing the party line. i think she is viewed as much more independent. that is assessment a lot of people are coming from. for me what was telling the president was at the press conference and the president said, essentially, don't pick on ambassador rice. she didn't know anything about gaziano. why did the administration put her out there as the spokesperson what ended up being misleading the world on what really happened in benghazi? it is just every single time we go down this step it is bungled and begs more questions than it answers. >> how do you think we're doing with the investigation? we were told we wouldn't really hear anything about all of this until after the election which some people thought was too bad. but now we are after the election so when do you think we will get some answers on what they know? melissa: remem

're hearing the obama administration released a budget that includes over a trillion dollars worth of tax hikes just as we inch toward the fiscal cliff with no compromise in sight. peter doocy is at the white house with the latest. peter? >> and the two numbers you need to know to best understand the president's proposal to avoid the fiscal cliff are 1.6 and 400. as in $1.6 trillion in new taxes now and $400 billion in spending cuts later. the white house also wants a new multi-year stimulus plan that's going to cost at least $50 billion in fiscal year 2013 alone and they want the ability to raise the debt ceiling on their own unless two-thirds of congress votes against it. but republican leaders in congress are not happy with this proposal which was presented to them yesterday by treasury secretary timothy geithner. >> i'm disappointed in where we are and disappointed in what's happened over the last couple of weeks. going over the fiscal cliff is serious business and i'm here seriously trying to resolve it and i would hope

, sunny. yesterday was round two between the obama administration and congressional leaders on capitol hill. and things aren't looking good. basically at this point, both sides have laid out an agenda, and they're waiting for the other side to blink. so much for that brief burst of optimism in washington over the fiscal cliff talks. now republicans and democrats can't even agree on where things stand. >> no substantive progress has been made in the talks. >> and you know there is progress. >> treasury secretary tim geithner sat down with bipartisan congressional leaders to keep pushing for a deal. a top boehner aide said the plan geithner presented is, quote, completely unrealistic. and a top democratic aide said republicans have taken to screaming at them. if no action is taken by december 31st, 650 billion in cuts to the pentagon and domestic programs and tax increases automatically go into effect. after the meeting, the finger-pointing came quickly. republicans say democrats aren't bringing to the table a plan that include significant cuts to medicare and entitlement programs. >> re

that the obama administration loves to talk about which is government investment in green technologies. we keep hearing we can't concede the next decade of things like solar panel technology to the chinese, henceforth we have to invest in companies like sillinger. is that true? >> it's true, i think,a gross sense. the chinese have been pouring money into pharma and aerospace. the u.s. needs to sort of invest in this to stay even at least with the chinese. discussing mainly small, private startups. and i think a lot of these will spin out of the clean energy industry. sustained government investment in industries of the future, i think, is important. >> i was going to say if china is becoming more expensive because people are asking for higher wages, didn't we see the same thing when japan was a low-wage country, hong kong, isn't there always going to be a country like bangladesh with lower wages that production will shift, too? >> possibly, except china is so much a category of its own. the scale is the biggest in the world. the infrastructure is unique. you want to move things to burma, you ha

of this crisis unless we do that. are the past for many years, the obama administration has struck a deal with car companies to nearly double fuel efficiency by 2025. we have doubled production of clean energy, made historic investments and breakthrough technologies, launched a new international partnerships like the climate and clean air coalition to take aim at pollutants like carbon and methane that account for more than 30% of current global warming. that has grown from just six countries to more than 24 today. we are committed to continuing this hard, slow, boring work in order to take the practical effective steps necessary to tackle climate change. our focus is on results, not on today's's headlines, but on the trend line. we are after what works. we will continue to chase down every opportunity to move bit by bit, if that is what it takes. that is a model for a change happens today, from securing the rights of women to solving the issue of nuclear weapons. there is no substitute for that hard work, no replacement for diplomacy, and no alternative to american leadership. so certain
